Mayor Aspden's legal faux-pas

Posted by: Brian Wicks in Untagged  on Print PDF

Barrie Mayor Dave Aspden has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in relation to a trip he made last spring to China.  But the question remains, did he do anything wrong when he went on the trip with some developers who paid part of his freight for the venture ??

While he may not be a crook, he may have acted immorally, or in the least, he did in my mind abuse the priviledge his office.  The OPP were forced into a lengthy investigation, lasting most of a year, and including dozens of interviews and a mountain of paperwork.  For what ????   Because city council at the time smelled a rat!!  Instead of launching an internal investigation, and demanding an explanation from Aspden himself, they led police on a wild goose chase, one that cost all of us a lot of money, sullied the office of Barrie Mayor, and put the political credibility of the city's leader in question.

In their investigation, police may have in fact found things that bring Aspden's judgement into question, but those aren't the conclusions they were asked to come up with.  They were only concerned with any potential crossing of legal lines, and found none.  Therefore, the mayor has been cleared, at least of any criminal wrong-doing, but it may be years before his colleagues and constituents are able to wipe away the tarnish that this whole sordid episode created for the man, the office, and I believe, the entire city council.

The question begs to be asked.  Are any apologies in order ??  From whom??  To whom??   Let me know what you think.

I am suprised that the NEW Mayor is so lacking in awareness of political polices and procedtures. He is not new to council having been a long serving counciler. He seems to be in trail and error mode, which is not a suitable approach for an office as big as Mayor of Barrie.

Aspden gave council no choice
written by Laurie , April 11, 2008

When Barrie Mayor Dave Aspden returned from China last April, he refused to answer council's questoins about who he was with, what he did and why he was there. Instead, he showed a promotional video of a Chinese construction consortium, which raised more questions than it answered.

Aspden continues to not deliver on the answers that he should have been providing. Just before Christmas last year, he pled guilty to misconduct in an Ontario Civilian Commission on Police Services hearing -- and that was almost nine months after city council began asking questions about his conduct as police board chairman. Even after paying his legal bills, city council continued to demand answers in January, but again Aspden refused.

Had he been honest when the police-board issue came to light in March and had he been honest in April, before and after his trip, there would have been no need for police to investigate.

Another Witch Hunt....

Just more positioning for the next Election. They need it after raising the City taxes by twice the rate of inflation. Many did not forgive last Mayor or counsel for their handling of both Park Place and One bag limit on Garbage.Last election reflected it.Never too early to lay potholes to oust poor Aspen after this term.
